The Lagos State Government is set construct a new airport on the Lekki axis of Lagos State. Speaking at a media parley organized at the headquarters of the Office of Public Private Partnerships today, the Special Adviser to Mr. Governor on Public Private Partnerships Mr. Ope George stated that the Government sought and obtained approval from the Federal Government for the construction of a new airport to be cited at the Lekki axis of Lagos. According to Mr. George, the project which is expected to take off in year 2023 will be erected on 3,500 hectares of land. He further disclosed that the master plan and aeronautical designs are in place; while studies are on-going about strategies, funding and other issues, after which the project will be taken to the marketplace. Furthermore, the Special Adviser stated that the airport which is expected to convey a minimum of five million people yearly will be constructed in partnership with local and foreign investors. Meanwhile, extensive negotiations are key to the success of the project, therefore, according to Mr. Ope George, extensive stakeholder’s engagement is ongoing with residents of the Lekki area. According to him, the Lekki area is the fastest growing investment destination in Nigeria; hence the urgent need of an airport. The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu officially received the approval for the construction of the Airport from the Honourable Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika at the Year 2022 Ehingbiti Submit in Lagos on the 11th of October, 2022.
